When a tree is felled, it is cut into manageable lengths, and then transported to the mobile sawmill.

This is where I start to get involved with the wood itself. The first operation I do is "Mill to Spec", this is where the tree is milled to the specifications of the depth of the bowl I ultimately want.

Tree to Bowl

After the tree is milled I then chainsaw the planks into approximate bowl sizes, and then I begin turning!

Hardwoods have to be dried out or seasoned for anything up to a year. I do not have that luxury, so all my bowls are kiln dried to a moisture content of 12%.

This means that when the final product reaches you it will not crack or warp even in hot dry centrally heated homes.

The final stages of turning are perhaps the most important. This is where the tree has been transformed from a beautiful thing to a beautiful bowl.

The first operation of turning is "rough turning". This is when I turn the bowl to a rough shape when the wood is still green or still wet.

By doing this I can establish the final shape of the bowl before it has dried out.
